Commanders hold first open practice of this season's training camp

Washington Commanders fans wasted no time packing the sidelines on the first day of training camp open to the public, eager to catch a glimpse of this year’s squad even if not everyone suited up for practice.

Wide receiver Terry McLaurin, who reported to camp Sunday, didn’t take the field due to an ankle injury. Still, his appearance reassured fans.

“There’s a lot of hope this year,” said Cameron Burden, a fan and artist who came bearing a drawing of his favorite quarterback to gift to Jayden Daniels. “Seeing how we made it last year, I think we have all the pieces to the puzzle to be on the right path to something great.”

Fans weren’t the only ones soaking up the atmosphere. A special group of young athletes with the Positive Athlete program also got a close-up view of practice — including one familiar face from the franchise’s past.
